Genesis. One of the major suggestions made at the various meetings and discussions attended by senior Gandhian activists and scholars notably Sadiq Ali, Dr. Susheela Nayar, Dr. Usha Mehta, Dr. B. N. Pande, Dr. Devendra Kumar, Suresh Rambhai, Nirmala Deshpande during the 125th birth anniversary celebrations of Mahatma Gandhi was to facilitate interaction among the several hundred institutions and individuals in different parts of India working to propagate the message of Gandhi.
With these objectives in mind four meetings were held in different parts of India from October 2, 1995 to 2nd October 1996 at which over one thousand Gandhian constructive workers, researchers and academics expressed their views on the urgent need for a new initiative which will emerge as the bridge between the Gandhian activists and academics, researchers, student and non-student youth and the several hundred Gandhian institutions working in different parts of India and abroad.
