Incorporated as a national NGO under the Societies' Act of Government of India, the Indian Council for Gandhian Studies is a conglomerate of several Gandhian Institutions in different parts of India and seeks to interpret Gandhi and his message in the light of the emerging global scenario. It also encourages educational institutions including schools, colleges and universities to update their approaches to nonviolent social change which will promote in the long run a violence-free, killing-free world. Established on 15 August 1995 in New Delhi, the Indian Council for Gandhian Studies has undertaken a number of innovative programmes in the country besides offering academic and reserach guidance to universities and several centres of learning outside India.

GenesisOne of the major suggestions made at the various meetings and discussions attended by senior Gandhian activists and scholars notably Sadiq Ali, Dr. Susheela Nayar, Dr. Usha Mehta, Dr. B. N. Pande, Dr. Devendra Kumar, Suresh Rambhai, Nirmala Deshpande during the 125th birth anniversary celebrations of Mahatma Gandhi was to facilitate interaction among the several hundred institutions and individuals in different parts of India working to propagate the message of Gandhi.

With these objectives in mind four meetings were held in different parts of India from October 2, 1995 to 2nd October 1996 at which over one thousand Gandhian constructive workers, researchers and academics expressed their views on the urgent need for a new initiative which will emerge as the bridge between the Gandhian activists and academics, researchers, student and non-student youth and the several hundred Gandhian institutions working in different parts of India and abroad.

Consequently, at a national convention of Gandhian institutions and scholars at Delhi on 15th August 1996 which marked the commencement of the year-long programmes to observe the 50th anniversary of India’s Independence, the Indian Council of Gandhian Studies was formed with Delhi as its headquarters with provision to form State-level Chapters.
