On suggestion from the Hon. R. Venkataraman, perhaps, as a natural corollary to the various programmes the ICGS and its collaborating organizations have been organising to tackle the problem of violence, a new initiative called ‘Himsamukth Bharat’(violence-free India), was launched on 30th January 2001 (the 145th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi) at Trivandrum Over a million people(school children, teachers, women, constructive workers, labourers, etc.) took the pledge against violence on that day in different parts of India. This was followed by a month-long state-wide campaign on foot from Neyyattinkara to Neeleswaram under the leadership of Dr. N. Radhakrishnan, K. Parameswara Sharma and Adv. Soman Paul. A team of thirty constructive workers and youth, representing various Gandhian organizations participated in this campaign.
